The fuel series, part 5: octane without the myths, ethanol without the surprises

Gasoline looks like the simplest product in the fuel business and behaves like one of the fussiest. It changes recipe with the seasons, carries ethanol with its own chemistry, ages faster than diesel, and supports an entire folklore about octane that costs drivers money at every pump. This page is the buyer's working knowledge: what the grades actually mean, what ethanol does in a tank, why the blend changes twice a year, and the handling that keeps stored gasoline from going stale.

What comes out of the rack

Finished gasoline is mostly born at the terminal, not the refinery: base gasoline arrives by pipeline, and the rack injects ethanol, ten percent for standard E10, plus additive packages as the truck loads. The grades differ by octane, the (R+M)/2 number on the yellow sticker: 87 regular, 89 midgrade, and 91 to 93 premium by market. Everything else on the marketing sign, the brand-name detergent claims included, rides in the additive injection; all of it must meet the same federal detergency floor, with branded packages layering on top. Knowing that the product is blended at the last minute explains most gasoline logistics: it's why ethanol and base stock travel separately, why the rack meter is the custody point, and why quality questions usually trace to the tank it sat in, not the refinery it came from.

Octane, honestly

Octane is knock resistance, the fuel's ability to tolerate compression without igniting early, and nothing else: no extra energy, no extra cleaning, no extra anything. High-compression and turbocharged engines are designed around high-octane fuel and pull their rated power with it; an engine rated for 87 runs identically on 93, minus the price difference. The rule costs nothing to follow: run the octane the manual requires. The one legitimate nuance is modern engines with knock sensors, which quietly pull timing on low octane and restore it on high, but that only matters when the manual says premium recommended, and the answer is still written by the manufacturer, not the pump.

Ethanol: good fuel with one bad habit

E10's ethanol raises octane and stretches supply, and it changes the water rules completely. Ethanol is hygroscopic: it pulls moisture from humid air and holds it in solution, invisibly, until it can't. Past the saturation point the ethanol and water fall out of the gasoline together, phase separation, leaving a corrosive water-alcohol layer on the tank bottom and a de-octaned, degraded gasoline above it. Diesel housekeeping tolerates a monitored water bottom; ethanol tanks tolerate none, because the water doesn't stay at the bottom, it recruits the ethanol on the way down. Prevention is sealing water out: tight caps and gaskets, sound vents, full tanks in humid storage, and water checks with ethanol-detecting paste. A separated tank is a service event: pump the bottom, evaluate what's left, and find the water's door before refilling.

Seasons and shelf life

Gasoline is blended to evaporate correctly for the weather: volatile in winter so cold engines start, restrained in summer, the low-RVP blends, so heat doesn't boil it into vapor lock and smog. The switchover runs on the regulatory calendar every spring and fall, and it matters to anyone storing fuel across seasons: winter gas in July heat wants to vapor off, and summer gas in January starts hard. Age compounds the mismatch: E10 in ordinary storage is best used within about three to six months before oxidation gums it and volatility walks off, faster in vented small-engine tanks. The program for stored gasoline is the diesel program with tighter numbers: buy fresh, turn it over, stabilize what must sit, and give seasonal equipment either ethanol-free fuel or a fresh fill and a fuel-system run-dry at layup.

Common questions

Does ethanol-free gasoline make sense?

For carbureted small engines, boats, and anything that sits, yes: E0 stores longer and can't phase-separate, at a premium price. For daily-driven modern vehicles, E10 is engineered-for and fine. Match the fuel to the duty, not to the folklore.

What does bad gasoline actually do to an engine?

Stale fuel starts hard, runs rough, and leaves gum in carburetors and injectors; separated fuel can corrode and lean-out combustion badly. Most no-start stories in seasonal equipment are fuel stories, and most of them were preventable with a stabilizer and a fresh fill.

What should a bulk gasoline buyer ask a supplier?

Where the fuel racks from, the ethanol content, the seasonal blend in the truck, and the delivery paperwork that proves all three. Fresh product from a busy terminal, documented at the meter, is the quality guarantee that matters; the rest is tank housekeeping on your side.
