Diesel Fuel Quality and Handling

The fuel series, part 1: how diesel goes bad, and the housekeeping that keeps it right

Diesel leaves the rack clean, bright, and on spec. Everything that goes wrong with it afterward happens in storage and handling, and almost all of it traces to three enemies: water, time, and temperature. A fleet that understands those three buys itself reliable cold starts, clean injectors, and filters that last their full change interval. This page is the working knowledge: what the enemies do, how to spot them early, and the habits that keep a tank of fuel as good as the day it was dropped.

What today's diesel actually is

Highway diesel in the US is ultra-low-sulfur, 15 parts per million, and the refining that strips the sulfur also strips some of the fuel's natural lubricity, which is added back with additives to protect pumps and injectors. Cetane, the ignition-quality number, runs in the mid-40s for typical fuel against a federal floor of 40. Most diesel now carries some biodiesel, B5 to B20 blends are common, and biodiesel is good fuel with two habits worth knowing: it attracts water more readily than straight petroleum diesel, and it feeds the microbes that live on water. None of this is a problem in a clean system with fuel that turns over. All of it becomes one in a wet tank where fuel sits.

Water: the root of nearly everything

Water gets into fuel systems the boring ways: condensation breathing in and out of a partly empty tank through hot days and cool nights, rain past a bad gasket, a wet delivery into a neglected tank. It settles to the bottom, and there it does its quiet damage: rust and corrosion in steel tanks, frozen lines in winter, injector damage when a slug gets picked up, and, worst of all, a home for growth. The countermeasures are equally boring and completely effective: keep tanks as full as practical to cut condensation, check bottoms for water on a schedule with paste or a sampling thief, drain or pump off what you find, and fix the gaskets and caps that let weather in. A dry tank has no bug problem, no phase problem, and half the corrosion problem.

The diesel bug: growth in the tank

Give diesel a layer of free water and a little time and life shows up: bacteria and fungi colonizing the fuel-water interface, building the dark slime the trade calls the diesel bug. The symptoms arrive at the filters, repeated plugging with black or green-tinged mats, often right after a delivery stirs the tank, and by the time filters are complaining the colony is established. The response is a sequence, not a single product: get the water out, because biocide poured onto a standing water bottom kills the top of the colony and leaves the habitat; treat with a proper fuel biocide at label rates; and polish the fuel, circulating it through filtration until it runs clear, cleaning the tank itself in bad cases. Then fix the water problem, or book the same job again for next year.

Cold weather: wax is patient

Diesel carries dissolved paraffin wax, and cold pulls it out of solution. At the cloud point the fuel hazes as crystals form; keep cooling and wax mats the filters at the fuel's operability limit; colder still and the fuel thickens toward gelling. Untreated summer No. 2 typically clouds in the 10-to-20-degree F neighborhood, which is comfortable in Houston and a real number in El Paso, the high plains, and anywhere trucks park outside overnight in a norther. Protection is bought three ways: blending in No. 1 (kerosene cuts wax content directly), cold flow improver additives dosed before the fuel is cold, and tank and filter management, water out before it freezes, filters fresh going into winter. The planning number is your coldest overnight parking temperature, and the additive has to be in the fuel before the cold snap, not after the truck won't start.

Time: fuel is fresh produce with a long shelf

Diesel oxidizes as it ages, slowly darkening and forming gums and particulates, and six months to a year is the honest planning window for untreated fuel in ordinary storage. Heat accelerates it, water and microbes shortcut it, and biodiesel content shortens it. For standby tanks, generators, seldom-used equipment, and emergency stock, the program is stabilizer additive, a sampling schedule, and periodic polishing or turnover, because the worst time to learn a standby tank went bad is the outage it was bought for. The field check costs nothing: draw a sample and look. Clear and bright is health; haze is water; darkening and sediment are age. When the eye says maybe, a lab says for sure.

Common questions

Is additive worth it, or is it snake oil?

The right additive for a named problem is worth it: cold flow improver ahead of winter, biocide against confirmed growth, stabilizer for long storage. A general miracle-in-a-bottle poured against no particular problem mostly buys peace of mind. Diagnose first, then dose.

Does fuel quality really change engine life?

Modern high-pressure common-rail systems run tolerances that make them the most fuel-sensitive diesels ever built. Clean, dry, on-spec fuel is cheap injector insurance; dirty or wet fuel shows up as injector and pump work orders long before overhaul age.

What does a supplier owe you on quality?

Fresh product from a reputable rack, clean equipment, and a bill of lading trail that says what was delivered and when.
