The diagnosis reads clean: the pipe was stationary when it stuck, a connection, a survey, a flow check, and circulation stays free and full because the annulus is open; the string simply will not move. Thick soft cake from a solids-heavy mud, high overbalance over depleted sands, and long motionless minutes are the recipe, which is why solids, weight, and habit-of-motion are the prevention.
Mechanical sticking: the closing hole
The other family is physical obstruction: the hole closing around the string or filling around it. Cuttings beds in deviated hole avalanche when the pumps stop or the string trips through them; brittle shale cavings and reactive shale squeeze; salt creeps; a keyseat worn into a dogleg grabs the tool joints on the way out; junk falls in from surface or from a failing wellbore. The signatures invert the differential case: sticking happens with the pipe moving, often tripping, and circulation chokes or dies because the annulus itself is packing off. Torque and drag trends, tight spots on connections, and what the shakers stopped returning were usually announcing it for hours before it happened, which is why crews are trained to treat those trends as the alarm, not the stick itself.
The response: opposite cures for opposite causes
The first moves are universal: record the string weight and torque, establish what circulation you have, and think before pulling, because the maximum-pull instinct consolidates packoffs and wastes the differential clock. Then the paths split. Differential: slack off and work toward the free direction, reduce overbalance where well control allows, and spot a release pill, an oil or surfactant spotting fluid placed across the stuck zone to crack the cake, then give it soak time with the string worked steadily; speed matters, because the cake's grip grows by the hour. Packoff: do not pull harder into the blockage; try to establish even partial circulation at low pressure, work the string patiently to break the bridge, and let the annulus clear itself a little at a time. Jars, if in the string, get used in the direction the mechanism suggests, down-jarring out of a keyseat, up out of settling fill. And when the freeing budget is spent, the endgame is orderly, not desperate: free-point to find where the string is held, back off or cut above it, and hand what remains to the fishing trade, or plug back and sidetrack where the arithmetic says so.
Prevention: the boring version of victory
Every stuck-pipe course ends at the same short list. Keep the mud honest: low drilled solids for thin, slick cake, density in the window and no higher, and low-shear rheology that actually carries cuttings out of deviated hole. Keep the hole clean: flow rate and pipe rotation matched to angle, sweeps that mean something, and shakers watched like the instruments they are. Keep the string moving: nobody's pipe sticks differentially while it's rotating, so connections get made with intent and surveys don't turn into coffee breaks over permeable sands.
